Evidence in Action – Case Study 002

Last Energy

Supporting inward investment through evidence-based industrial intelligence.

The Challenge
Last Energy was exploring Wales as a potential location for investment, manufacturing and long-term deployment, but initially had only limited visibility of the manufacturing capability already available across the Welsh supply chain.

The Intelligence
Mike Gillard became involved after being approached by a specialist Scottish consultancy he had worked with previously. He introduced Last Energy to Welsh Government, the Wales Nuclear Forum and other relevant Welsh stakeholders, then helped build a targeted supplier-engagement programme using Industry Wales networks, Business Wales Events, direct communications and LinkedIn.

The Outcome
Supplier events in Cardiff and Swansea, structured one-to-one meetings and manufacturing site visits gave Last Energy direct evidence of Welsh capability. As confidence increased, expected Welsh content rose from approximately 10% to around 80%.

What Changed?

Rather than relying on assumptions about the Welsh supply chain, Last Energy met manufacturers directly, saw engineering capability first-hand and gained a much broader understanding of what could potentially be sourced in Wales.

Why It Matters

The work showed how targeted engagement, stakeholder connections and manufacturing intelligence can materially influence inward-investment decisions before contracts are awarded.
